What is SPAM?

defines "spam" as an unsolicited emailing, usually to many people for commercial or personal gain.

Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send - most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender.

Email spam targets individual users with direct mail messages. Email spam lists are often created by scanning Usenet postings, stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching the Web for addresses. Email spams typically cost users money out-of- pocket to receive. Many people - anyone with measured phone service - read or receive their mail while the meter is running, so to speak. How should I deal with "SPAM?"

If someone sends you a nasty message, then you should try to reconcile the issue. If this fails you can always unsubscribe any repeat offenders. If you feel you're dealing with an abusive or inappropriate situation outside the realm of your list, report the problem by sending a message to your list host or autoresponder service.

If a disgruntled subscriber insists that he never requested your list from our web site and accuses you of spam, then please let us know. All subscription requests are logged, including the originating IP address, and a date and time stamp.



What is spamming?
